Color Guard:
Newsome's Color Guard Team is responsible for formally and patriotically presenting the US and Florida State Flags during competitions and special events. Being a member of Color Guard requires impeccable personal appearance and precise movements.
CyberPatriot:
Cyber Patriot is the National Youth Cyber Defense Competition. The competition puts teams of high school and middle school students in the position of newly hired IT professionals tasked with managing the network of a small company. Teams compete for the top placement within their state and region, and the top teams compete at the National level in Baltimore, MD.
Drill:
Newsome's Drill Team is compromised of both a "Regulation" team and a "Exhibition" team. Exhibition Drill involves unique and original routines made by the individual cadets and includes spinning and throwing of drill rifles. Regulation Drill follows a more rigid set of commands and individual movements with a focus on precision and finely tuned movements.
JLAB:
Newsome's JROTC Leadership and Academic Bowl (JLAB) Team has 2 distinct teams consisting of a Leadership Team, focused on our country's traditions and history, and an Academic Team, exposed to SAT & ACT type questions. Winners at the district level compete in Washington DC for the National Championship.
Raiders/PT Team:
Newsome's Raider Team is the most physically demanding of all the JROTC teams. Emphasis is placed on physical and mental fitness and requires a lot of stamina and willpower. Competitions consist of a 5K Team Run, Tire Flip, Rope Bridge, Cross Country Rescue, and an Obstacle Course. So, if you don't mind hard work, getting sweaty & dirty then consider joining Raiders.
Rifle:
Newsome's Rifle Team consists of shooters firing a .177mm rifle from 3 different positions: prone, standing, and kneeling at targets not larger than a half dollar coin at a distance of 10 meters. The center of these targets is approximately the size of the tip of a pencil and is worth 10 points. To consistently score a "10" in any position requires a great degree of dedication and skill and is the result of many hours spent practicing at the Newsome Rifle Range.
